Wuthering Heights

Mr Lockwood rented Thrushcross Grange in the north for peace and recuperation.  He pays a visit to his landlord, Mr. Heathcliff, a surly, dark man living in a manor called Wuthering Heights—“wuthering” being a local adjective used to describe the fierce and wild winds that blow during storms on the moors but his manners are uncouth; the reserved mistress of the house is in her mid-teens; and a young man seems to be a family member yet dresses and speaks like a servant.

Thirty years earlier, Wuthering Heights was occupied by Mr Earnshaw, his teenage son Hindley, and his daughter Catherine. On a trip to Liverpool, Earnshaw encountered a homeless boy described as "dark-skinned gypsy in aspect". He adopted the boy and named him Heathcliff. Hindley felt Heathcliff supplanted him in his father's affections and became bitterly jealous. Catherine and Heathcliff became friends and spent hours each day playing on the moors. They grew too close and hated every moment they were apart.
